THE DISPATCHES
11/19/2017
Looking back, it's a little shocking to consider how many people I know who gave up on their trajectories as interesting people, simply because a parent or friend or confidante gave them badly put together ideas about the future and its prospects. I had to talk to someone this past week and ask that she consider more options than she was taught she could reach, before making any big decisions about the next ten to fifty years.
I am fascinated not so much that people advise other people(everyone likes to hear themselves offer insight, yours truly included), but that people often take advice unreservedly, and without much resistance. They absorb it whole, interpret it in its most straightforward way, that is, without applying the nuance of context.
So this week's piece is about bad advice, and the things I have advised on how to manage it. That's the long and the short of it.
I hope your week is off to a great start!
Stay human,
