THE DISPATCHES

08/20/2017

Recently I overheard someone at a museum, "Why do artists so many sabotage their lives and careers?" Of course, as I thought about it generally, the question presented many problems.

But it does resonate. The loaded nature of this question follows the idea—too easily, and without enough evidence—that artists may at best, be prone to a work style that is incompatible with what is “normal” in the marketplace: order, sociability, convention, and politeness. At worst, they're lazy and entitled. At best, they're all lacking in the right "tools" to get the job done.

I don't buy either completely

So that is, in a roundabout way, the subject of this week's installment and I hope you'll follow it to the website.

That's it from me. Enjoy your week ahead.

Stay human,
